Cinnamon is a herb that has been used for many centuries that have very good health effects if used accordingly. I am not a doctor but i can tell you that cinnamon has had some pretty good reviews from people that have used it. Cinnamon has been used for ailments as arthritis, diabetes, weightloss, high cholesterol, etc. The list can go on and on. When looking for cinnamon make sure you are looking for True Cinnamon. True Cinnamon, or Ceylon Cinnamon is a native of Sri Lanka ( Formerly known as Ceylon). As a matter of fact, True cinnamon is not what is sold in most grocery stores in the United States. What is sold in most grocery stores in the United States is Cassia. Cassia is a related spice that is sometime sold as cinnamon. Cassia is sometimes called "Indonesian Cinnamon" Or Chineese Cinnamon.
There are many uses of cinnamon but I will only touch base on a few. Uses of cinnamon include but are not limited to the therapeutic use in dentistry. In dentistry it is used as a local anesthetic and antiseptic for teeth and gum because of the essential oil (Eugenol). Cinnamon is also used in mouthwash, air freshener, candy, and it is used for baking, and cooking. Remember the oil I just spoke to you about, the essential oil Eugenol, well, it has also been found to reduce blood sugar levels in diabetics. Cinnamon is also used for flatulence(gas or bloating). Cinnamon is known to stimulate and warm the stomach, therefore causing you to have that laxative effect.
Now that I have touched on the good aspects of cinnamon lets talk about the side effects of cinnamon. Uncooked cinnamon spice can cause choking and respiratory distress. Excessive use of cinnamon may cause inflammation of taste buds, gum swelling and mouth ulcers. Large quantities can cause difficulty breathing, inflammation of the stomach, or even convulsions.
Please be careful when taking cinnamon. If anyone has tried to take it for any reason let me know. I would love to hear feed back.
